My New Flame
Moritz Waldemeyer has design an LED candle for Ingo Maurer.
"Circuit board, metal, plastic. Based on video material, the LEDs render a flickering candle flame in a realistic and captivating way." (http://www.ingo-maurer.com/en/products/my-new-flame)
As I first saw and experienced my new flame, I was drawn in, keen to investigate and understand what, from a far evoked very flame like imagery. At one point I felt a warmth and heat resonating from the 'fake flame' however this must have been due to the sun streaming in from a sunny afternoon!
I would be interested to investigate if when in a dark, cold environment, any subliminal warth can be taken away from such a primative association? How much light is given off and if, from a far, placed beside a living flicker flame you could tell which was 'real'.
This is not to say my new flame is not 'real' in fact Maurer has programmed the behaviour of the ‘flame’ based on video footage of actual candles.
In reference to my design practice, I am drawn to lngo maurer's flame for its ability to mimic that subconscious draw we have towards the flame. Placing a bare hand over the led unit, and half expecting to be burnt.
